Founded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. The museum holds the world’s largest international folk art collection of more than 150,000 objects from six continents and over 150 nations, representing a broad range of global artists whose artistic expressions make Santa Fe an international crossroads of culture. For many visitors, fascination with folk art begins upon seeing the whimsical toys and traditional objects within the Girard Collection. For others, the international textiles, ceramics, carvings and other cultural treasures in the Neutrogena Collection provide the allure.  The museum’s historic and contemporary Latino and Hispano folk art collections, spanning the Spanish Colonial period to modern-day New Mexico, reflect how artists respond to their time and place in ways both delightful and sobering. In 2010, the museum opened the Mark Naylor and Dale Gunn Gallery of Conscience, where exhibitions encourage visitors to exchange ideas on complex issues of human rights and social justice.

One of Santa Fe’s most anticipated special events, the Flea can be counted on to provide collectors of all ages and interests with a wide array of well-priced folk art treasures from  across the globe--from toys to textiles, jewelry to masks, to wood carvings, yard art and more. A special “Collectors’ Corner” displays more rare and unique items.

Lynne Cooke’s lecture will consider the work of those who have created art on the periphery, and the moments when these unschooled “outsiders” intersected with the avant-garde. Variously called primitive, amateur, self-taught, naïve, folk, visionary or outsider, these creators are routinely excluded from the art historical canon on the grounds that they have not followed a path of academic art schooling and participated in mainstream art discourse and markets. Cooke offers an alternative narrative that focuses on key moments of intersection between “outliers” and “modern:” credentialed artists who advocated on behalf of their uncredentialed counterparts, and major art institutions which embraced such work at specific moments of cultural change when the boundaries between the center and periphery became unusually porous. Today, when it is often difficult to identify visually work made by trained and untrained makers, there are few justifications for maintaining unquestioned these calcified categories. Among the “outlier” artists whom Cooke will address are Forrest Bess, Henry Darger, William Edmondson, Lonnie Holley, Sister Gertrude Morgan, Martín Ramírez, Bill Traylor, and Judith Scott.

In 2014, Lynne Cooke was named senior curator of special projects in modern art at the National Gallery of Art (NGA). Previous to assuming this position, she was the Andrew W. Mellon Professor at the NGA’s Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (2012-2014), the deputy director and chief curator at the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid, Spain (2008-2012), and curator at the Dia Art Foundation in New York (1991-2008). Among the notable exhibitions she has organized are projects on Cristina Iglesias, Rosemarie Trockel, Blinky Palermo, Francis Alÿs, Richard Serra, and Zoe Leonard.

Community through Making From Peru to New Mexico

Comunidad a través de la Creación De Perú a Nuevo México January 6, 2019 - January 5, 2020

Community through Making brings together local and Peruvian artists to explore how art shapes healthy and vibrant communities. The installation is a conversation across borders, highlighting three collaborative projects that paired local artists and artists from Peru for 10-day residencies in conjunction with the exhibition Crafting Memory: The Art of Community in Peru. This exhibition in the Gallery of Conscience experiments with community curation, filling the gallery with video, stories, and artworks as created and told by museum program participants over the course of the spring and summer of 2018.
