DIY Sewn Stories

Appropriate for grades:
Subject areas: Visual and Performing Arts

In the Museum of International Folk Art, we have a special exhibit that looks at how communities across different continents told stories in difficult times. Each community used embroidery, quilting and applique to share what was hard, special, or important to them, or what they wanted to remember about their homes, families, and communities. We are going through difficult times today which often means staying in our homes. So, we want you to think about what you love about your house or home, or somewhere in your home, or a place that feels like home. How you can make that picture in fabric? You can sketch out your idea on paper and you can think about the different shapes that you will put together to make your picture.

You'll need:

  • sheet of paper
  • pencil
  • scissors
  • fabric (felt sheet) 9" x 12"
  • felt or fabric pieces
  • glue (Tacky glue)
  • Optional: markers, yarn, ribbon & pompoms (sewing materials)
