Lars Krutak Tattoo Lecture

Discover the fascinating world of Tattoo Anthropologist Lars Krutak http://larskrutak.com/ with a lecture and book signing presented in conjunction with the exhibition Sacred Realm: Bleassings and Good Fortune Across Asia

Krutak began tattoo research in 1996 as a graduate student at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Trained as an archaeologist and cultural anthropologist, he spent three years exploring the complex symbolism and practice of tattooing throughout the Arctic.

In 2002, Krutak embarked on a world tour devoted to recording the lives, stories, and experiences of tattooed people around the globe. He has worked as an Anthropological Consultant for three National Geographic television documentaries, and is the Technical Advisor for one of the world’s largest and most popular tattoo websites, www.vanishingtattoo.com. In 2003, he was a co-recipient of the American Book Award in Literature.

Look for Lars in the Discovery Channel (USA), Discovery World (Europe), and Discovery Travel & Living (Australia & New Zealand) series “Tattoo Hunter” focusing on indigenous body modification practices worldwide.

Day Trip to Truchas

Join us for an Art and Architecture trip to Truchas and Las Trampas featuring art created by well-known Hispanic santeros and painters of work in two historic churches (one built in the 1700s). We then visit “Casa de las Nubes” the home of a self-taught woodcarver who has been building it for 30 years. Lunch in Chimayo completes the tour. THIS TRIP HAS FILLED, waiting list only. In Truchas we will visit the Nuestra Senora del Riosario Church; built in the early 1800’s the church is significant for its age, architecture and Altar screen.  We also have the rare opportunity to visit the town’s Morada, and the hand-made home of Isabro Ortega wil be opened to us.  In Las Trampas we will visit the San Jose Gracia Church, built in the late 1700’s the altar screen several bultos have been atributed  to early New Mexican Santeros. This tour is exclisively for current Friends of Folk Art members, and space is limited! The cost of the tour is $45.00 per person and includes transportation from the Museum of International Folk Art and lunch at Rancho de Chimayo. THIS EVENT HAS FILLED

This program is presented in conjunction with the exhibition, Under Pressure: Choices Folk Artists Make in Today’s Global Marketplace
