The Labor of Leisure: Reconsidering the Work of Tourism in Rural Ethnic China

Film Screening of the documentary 农家乐 Peasant Family Happiness and a Public Talk with the filmmaker Dr. Jenny Chio, Emory University

See the documentary Peasant Family Happiness with filmmaker Dr. Jenny Chio. In 2006, China’s government announced a campaign to “Build a New Socialist Countryside,” while the China National Tourism Administration launched the “Year of Rural Tourism.” Based on over ten years of fieldwork, this talk reflects on and reconsiders the benefits and unexpected consequences of national rural socio-economic development, cultural heritage preservation, and ethnic tourism programs for rural, ethnic minority people in China today.

Presented in conjunction with the exhibition, Quilts of Southwest China, the film screening and talk will take place at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture.  By Museum admission.
