Miniature drop-front cabinet with drawers

Small personal cabinets or boxes were popular keepsake items for holding cherished possessions. It is interesting that Anna Maria McIlvain chose straw appliqué rather than embroidery to adorn her box. Today we can only wonder why? Was straw a more readily available resource than embroidery thread?
